防水闸门是井下防水的主要安全设施，凡水患威胁严重的矿井，在井下巷道设计布置中，就应在适当地点预留防水闸门硐室和水闸墙的位置，使矿井形成分翼、分水平或分采区隔离开采。在水患发生时，能够使矿井分区隔离，缩小灾情影响范围，控制水势危害，确保矿井安全。
